Organic Fresh Mugwort (4 oz.)

7 left

Mugwort has a long history of culinary use, it has a unique musty herbal fragrance, the flavor is just as unique and slightly bitter.  It is often used as a spice for meats.  The leaves can be eaten fresh in salads, or cooked in soups.  Mugwort, being in the mint family, has a long history of use in beverages. It can be used as an aromatic herb added to soups, stews or stuffing for meat dishes, or infused as a tea. The herb is said to improve digestion. The young stems can be added to salads and the leaves or shoots can be cooked as a vegetable. Try infusing fresh mugwort in local honey to add to your teas or oatmeal!

Take equal amounts of lightly chopped fresh herb and honey and combine into jar. Make sure you have enough honey to completely submerge the mugwort, and make sure you have enough mugwort to fill at least 3/4 of the jar. Seal the jar and let sit for at least 2-3 weeks before dipping in! 6 weeks is best. You can strain off the herb if you like, or leave in.  You can use in cooking and baking, and in teas and drinks.

There are many recipes online for fresh mugwort. Reach out to us at the farm if you would like to know more!

Kahumana Organic Farm

Kahumana Organic Farm is the heart of our community. We have been a diverse farm using stricty organic and biodynamic methods since our community was founded in 1978.

Our lively crew of young farmers are committed to gain the skills to revive the small regenerative farm in Hawaii to contribute to reducing our dependence on imported food.

At the same time, the farm is a place of vocational learning for families transitioning from homelessness, people with disabilities and youth. Reconnecting with the land through farming is a key stepping stone for leading a more healthy, productive and balanced life.

Our perspective:
Our farm and farmers together become like a self sufficient organism: using the resources of the sun, soil, and water to grow inputs needed to propogate a hearty compost where fruits, vegetables and mutually dependent livestock can thrive. With proper managment, we can reduce or eliminate the need for outside inputs.

Our goal is to build a balanced, nutrient-rich soil, full of life. We build and restore the soil using a variey of techniques, traditions and technologies including biodynamics, composting, natural farming and permaculture (restorative agriculture). We address pests and weeds through an integrated approach and, when needed, use organic pest control remedies that we make ourselves using ingredients from the farm (neem, chile, etc).

We use the tools of crop rotation, green manures, compost building, permaculture, forage crops and hope to show that family and community-sized organic farms are a viable and necessary alternative for the future of farming in Hawaii.
