Organic Dried Tulsi Basil (1 oz)
$5.00
Tulsi Basil (Ocimum tuniflorum)
Tulsi basil, also known as holy basil, can be used as a stand alone herb for a simple infusion or used in cooking. Tulsi adds a spicy and bitter component to any culinary dish. For every one cup of boiling water, use a heaping tablespoon of dried herb and let sit for 5 minutes. Holy basil has been revered throughout India for thousands of years. Ayurvedic texts describe holy basil as a pillar of holistic herbal medicine and a goddess incarnated in plant form (the mother medicine of nature). Many traditional Hindus worship an altar bearing a holy basil plant that is placed in the courtyard of their home or in another prominent location. Today holy basil remains one of the most cherished of India's sacred plants. The leaves smell of peppermint, cloves, licorice and lemon.
Kahumana Organic Farm
Kahumana Organic Farm is the heart of our community. We have been a diverse farm using stricty organic and biodynamic methods since our community was founded in 1978.Our lively crew of young farmers are committed to gain the skills to revive the small regenerative farm in Hawaii to contribute to reducing our dependence on imported food.
At the same time, the farm is a place of vocational learning for families transitioning from homelessness, people with disabilities and youth. Reconnecting with the land through farming is a key stepping stone for leading a more healthy, productive and balanced life.
Our perspective:
Our farm and farmers together become like a self sufficient organism: using the resources of the sun, soil, and water to grow inputs needed to propogate a hearty compost where fruits, vegetables and mutually dependent livestock can thrive. With proper managment, we can reduce or eliminate the need for outside inputs.
Our goal is to build a balanced, nutrient-rich soil, full of life. We build and restore the soil using a variey of techniques, traditions and technologies including biodynamics, composting, natural farming and permaculture (restorative agriculture). We address pests and weeds through an integrated approach and, when needed, use organic pest control remedies that we make ourselves using ingredients from the farm (neem, chile, etc).
We use the tools of crop rotation, green manures, compost building, permaculture, forage crops and hope to show that family and community-sized organic farms are a viable and necessary alternative for the future of farming in Hawaii.
